The Fairy Tale Trap is a powerful blend of memoir, self help, and relationship insight for anyone who’s ever asked, “How did I end up here again?” With raw honesty and compassionate wisdom, Shelley Murphy unravels the myths we inherit about love, safety, and self-worth, revealing how early wounds and cultural scripts shape the relationships we choose and the ones we endure.

Drawing from personal experience and therapeutic reflection, Shelley explores the impact of date rape, domestic violence, and emotional entrapment, while guiding readers toward reclaiming agency and rewriting their inner narrative. She shines a light on the fairy tales we’re raised with, stories that promise rescue, reward self sacrifice, and romanticise suffering and how they quietly teach us to accept co-dependence, ignore red flags, and lose ourselves in pursuit of “happily ever after.”

This book invites you to examine your relationship with yourself, the original blueprint and offers tools to break free from repeating painful patterns.

It’s not just a book. It’s a mirror, a map, and a gentle companion for those ready to step out of the trap and into a life authored by truth, courage, and self love.

Shelley's 'why'

My 'why' didn't arrive neatly wrapped it unfolded slowly, over the years it took to write this book.

I began with a simple intention: to share what I'd about relationships personally and professionally. The goal to help others heal after heartbreak and stop repeating the same mistakes in the quest to find true love.

A kind of 'how to'. But as I wrote deeper personal truths surfaced. Encounters from my past, long buried memories and unexpected confirmations forced me to finally connect dots I had struggled to join through the greater part of my life.

When I finally began writing down the parts of my story I had kept to my self for decades something shifted. I didn't feel exposed. I didn't feel disloyal. I didn't feel ashamed. I felt lighter, the kind of lightness that only comes whe you finally shine light on the unspoken.

I don't share my story to shame or blame. I don't share it for sympathy. I share it to break the cycle.

Because to put it bluntly we cannot heal what we refuse to acknowledge.

Avoiding accountability isn't love.

Excusing abuse isn't love.

Asking children to keep secrets isn't love

My childhood was in a time where violence in the home was dismissed as 'just the way things were'. Almost 65 years later I sit with women who are still living versions of the same dangerous story.

Yes we have had gigantic shifts such as the 'Me Too' movement, stronger laws, louder public conversations. Yet even with all of that this remains a challenge.

Not because women aren't brave or aware, The battleground isn't only public.

It's domestic. It's intimate. It's inside the four walls where we still believe that we are not 'woman enough' to be loved safely. That somehow we are the cause of the problem.

We internalise shame.

We protect the story.

We worry that other women will judge us as less - less strong, less desirable, less worthy if we admit what we've lived through in our quest to feel loved.

And that is why'my why' is so clear now.

It is time to stop sweeping this under the carpet.

It is time to stop letting shame keep us quiet.

It is time to stand tall, tell the truth and demand better for ourselves, for our families and for the generations who follow.

Change begins with one voice. Then another. And another.

Until those voices become a choir powerful enough to shift the world.

Women are still asking the same heartbreaking question. 'How do I get the people who say they love to be treat me better? To make me feel safe?'

We have seen that. We have breathed that. And we know painfully that we are not there yet. There is still more to do.

I see it every day in my work. Women of every age, every background trying to piece together why love and safety still feels like something they have to earn, negotiate or justify. Trying to work out how to be treated with the dignity that should have theirs from the beginning.

And this isn't change for women and girls alone, it's change that lifts families, communities and generations.

It is time to open the doors and windows of our homes and let out the breath we have held for too long, to exhale together, rise together and step into something better. Because everyone of us deserves it.

That is my why.

We are a generation with the language, the laws and the visibility to name what our mothers and grandmothers could not. And that means we carry a responsibility, not to be perfect, not to be fearless but to be honest.

To refuse the old scripts.

To refuse to shrink.

May the next generation inherit our courage not our silence.

With love
